Cellular Jail

With the Revolt of 1857 on 15th Jan 1858 British decided to make Andaman group of Islands into a colonial prison and so in the name of Lt Archibald Blair named the area Port Blair. After 10 years in 1906 three storeyed jail building got ready. Throughout this construction journey of prisoners were tortured to make this construction. With the construction of this Jail the darkest period in the history of Andaman started and hence it is also considered as Kalapani. These remote islands were considered to be a suitable place to punish the independence activists mainly because they were isolated from the mainland and were surrounded from all sides with water. From 1811 to 1921 Vinayak Damodar Veer Savarkar was prisoned in the cell of Cellular jail along with Yogendra Shukla, and Batukeshwar Dutt and many more freedom fighters.

Ross Island and North Bay islands are easily seen from the Central tower which was used as Watch tower during East India Company.

Today Cellular jail is a monument of pride. In day time one can visit jail and feel the struggle of our freedom fighters by entering in the cells and seeing the gallow area where they used to be hanged and thrown in the sea below.
